The National Heavy Vehicle Charging Pilot is underway through the Commonwealth Department of Infrastructure, Transport Cities and Regional Development.

The purpose of this project is to test alternative models to replace heavy vehicle registration fees and fuel based charges, with charging based on road use by the heavy vehicle industry.  This is project is of great significance to the transport industry and the detail is still being worked through.

The Commonwealth is in the process of evaluating the Small Scale trial (on road charging) and embarking on a large-scale trial, with more vehicles across different sectors and aspects of the industry.  The Large Scale trial is proposed to commence I early 2020.  Under the trial programs, operators receive “mock invoices’ which detail the charges they would incur for road usage.  The Department is looking for additional operators of varying sizes across a range of industry sectors to participate in the next stage of trials.

To learn more about this activity, the TTA, in consultation with the Tasmanian Department of State Growth, has coordinated an information session to be provided by the Commonwealth:
